Arsenal 1-2 Aston Villa: Gunners automatic CL place in doubt
Arsenal were made to pay for their remarkable inability to put the ball in the back of the net when they lost 1-2 to Aston Villa at the Emirates this afternoon.
The result leaves Arsenal's ambitions of a third place Premier league finish in the balance, while confirming Aston Villa's top flight status for yet another season.
Arsene Wenger has lamented Arsenal's end-of-season capitulation after a 1-2 loss to Aston Villa hands Manchester City the advantage in the race for a third placed finish in the Premier league.
A win would have taken the Gunners to within a point of second placed Chelsea but as it stands, City have a game in hand at home against Stoke, with a win seeing them leapfrog Arsenal in the table.
With the top three in the Premier League assured of automatic Champions League qualification, the fourth placed side face the potential banana-skin of a two-legged qualification tie - which almost provided a stumbling block for Tottenham earlier this season.
After the game, Wenger admitted that failure to finish in the top three represented a poor return for his side who were fighting on four fronts just a few weeks back, yet have now slumped to three defeats in their last four Premier League games.
"Of course we are frustrated," he told reporters.
"We dropped three points today that could cost us automatic qualification for the Champions League. It will be a big setback to finish fourth.
"We have been hit hard recently by bad performance and results. You can see we suffered at the start today but we have to raise above that. We were nervous defensively."

Ferguson has tapped into his wide network of scouts, staff and contacts - including his brother and Manchester United's chief European scout, Martin - to study Barcelona and Messi over the last two years.
Now they meet again in the final at Wembley on May 28. And the Old Trafford boss could not be better prepared to negate the threat from the world's greatest player.
Ferguson has statistics and information even the Argentinian maestro may not know about himself.
He knows how Messi gets the ball, what he does when he gets it, how to stop him getting it and how to neutralise him when he does.
In fact, he has been preparing for their next meeting since the final whistle blew on United's disappointing 2-0 defeat in Rome two years ago.
Ferguson was so annoyed that Barcelona had undone him because he felt his players simply did not follow orders.
The United boss has stopped Messi before. The Barca star was completely shut out over two legs of the 2008 semi-finals when United held the Catalans to a goalless draw in the Nou Camp and then won the return 1-0.
But it was a different story in Rome's Olympic Stadium when the little maestro scored the second goal in Barca's 2-0 win.
The United boss will not rely just on his staff at Old Trafford.
He will also talk to close friend Jose Mourinho whose Real Madrid side were dumped by Barca in the other semi.
And Ferguson, 69, has also used his own eyes, too, rather than take in live games or replays on TV and recordings.
After United beat Schalke 2-0 in the first leg of their semi in Gelsenkerchen on April 26, the team stayed over in Germany rather than fly straight back to England after the match as they normally would.
And the following day, Ferguson did not travel back with the team - but instead was on a plane to Madrid to watch Messi, 23, score both goals against Madrid in the first leg of the other semi.
Many may think Mourinho is not the best sounding-board, having been well beaten by Barca in the semi-finals and thrashed 5-0 in the Nou Camp in La Liga earlier this season. But Real blotted out Messi in the Copa del Rey final - which they won 1-0 - and also in the most recent league meeting, a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.
Tottenham legend Ardiles admitted: "For some time I thought that Diego could never be surpassed, nor Pele. But no longer.
"I would now say that Lionel Messi will go down in history as the No 1 player of all time, the best that there ever was.

Liverpool Raul Meireles named PFA Fans Player of the Year
Meireles arrived at Anfield last summer when he was bought by then Reds manager Roy Hodgson for £11.5 million from FC Porto.
The Portuguese international initially struggled as he adapted to the English game and Liverpool’s style of play, but following the departure of Hodgson - and the arrival of Kenny Dalglish - his form improved and has since scored five goals during the Scot's tenure.
The absence of Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard through injury has highlighted Meireles' importance to the team, and Dalglish admits he is delighted with the midfielder's contribution.
"Raul has always had the ability he has shown recently," Dalglish told the club's official website.
"Maybe he's settled down a little bit and is more comfortable and confident because he is playing well but there's been nothing drastic [tactically] for any of the players really.
"It is fantastic to see Raul doing so well. He has always been a talented footballer, he's always had what we are seeing now but it's been trying to get it out and it is coming out now and he's scoring goals."

Fergie ready for summer clear-out
ALEX FERGUSON has warned his Manchester United squad he will not be afraid to wield the axe this summer.
The Old Trafford boss is facing a clear-out, with the futures of several stars up in the air.
United head to Newcastle tonight knowing they could still end the season by lifting both the Premier League and Champions League trophies.
But there are question marks over up to TEN of their squad going into the close season and Fergie says he has never let emotions get in the way. He admitted: "It's a horrible thing to say but you can't be sentimental in this job.
"My job is to manage United, to produce results and I am no different from any other manager. I'll not be regarded in the same way if I'm not successful.
"If it's on the football field and I see something I feel is a retrograde step, I have to act and make decisions.
"In management, you have to be able to make decisions - sometimes you're not right. But it doesn't concern me too much because the important thing is being able to do it."
Keeper Edwin van der Sar, 40, is joining Gary Neville, 36, in retirement and Paul Scholes, also 36, is leaning towards hanging up his boots.
Owen Hargreaves and Michael Owen are out of contract, while Wes Brown and Tomasz Kuszczak are likely to be up for sale. Darron Gibson and Gabriel Obertan have struggled this season and a question mark still hangs over £30.75million club record signing Dimitar Berbatov.
United have an option to extend the former Tottenham striker's deal, which has a year to run, by a further 12 months but he is unlikely to be happy with his current bit-part role.
Ferguson has been forced to make key decisions in the past even with some of his favourite players. And he will have to make more this summer as he revealed last month he could bring in three new signings in the close season.
Some will inevitably make way and the United chief added: "I love the players that I've had and I've been very, very fortunate to have had great players who have come through my career with me.
"At Aberdeen there were the likes of Miller, McLeish, and Kennedy, who were players that were very loyal to me.
"At United I've had Giggs, the Nevilles, Scholes and Butt, who represent the spirit of the club. All of the players that I have had here have played a part in my success.
"So when I see something happening, as in the cases of Nicky Butt and Phil Neville, I have had to release them to other opportunities.
"It was getting to the stage that I was terrified of talking to them and telling them they weren't playing.
"When the time came for me to let them go, I knew I was cutting really important, loyal strings and I didn't enjoy it."
Meanwhile, Berbatov could pay the price for his misses on Saturday in the 1-0 FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City by being benched at Newcastle tonight.
The Bulgarian fluffed two great chances to put United in control early on.
But Wayne Rooney returns from his two-match ban for swearing into a TV camera and Javier Hernandez looks set to get the nod alongside him.
Van der Sar insists his glittering career can still finish on a double next month.
The loss at Wembley denied the Dutchman the chance of winning the only domestic medal which has eluded him during his six years with the Red Devils. But Arsenal's late slip in drawing 1-1 against Liverpool on Sunday has put United in control of the title race - while they are in the last four of the Champions League.
