Messi, Xavi, Ronaldo vie for award

The first shortlist for the new UEFA Best Player in Europe Award has been announced, with Xavi Hernandez, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the running to land the title.

The award, which brings back the format of the old Ballon D'Or and sees 53 sports journalists from each of the continent's football associations select the top player in Europe, will be presented during the UEFA Champions League group stage draw on August 25.

Unsurprisingly, World Player of the Year Messi is favourite, although Ronaldo's 40 goals for Real Madrid could also see him pick up the prize.

Each journalist picks their three best-ranked players, with the first player receiving five points, the second three, and the third one point, to reveal a list of the top ten players in Europe.

The rest of Europe's elite:
Andres Iniesta - Barcelona - (33 points)
Falcao - Porto - (17 points)
Wayne Rooney - Manchester United (15 points)
Nemanja Vidic - Manchester United (5 points)
Zlatan Ibrahimovic - AC Milan (4 points)
Gerard Pique - Barcelona (4 points)
Manuel Neuer - Bayern Munich (3 points)

VIOLENCE erupted after Paraguay beat Venezuela 5-3 at Copa America

VIOLENCE erupted after Paraguay beat Venezuela 5-3 on penalties in their Copa America semi-final.

Players and coaching staff could be seen wading in during a mass brawl which flared up as the teams were leaving the pitch.

One of the big personal confrontations caught on camera saw Venezuela's Nicolas Fedor and Paraguay's No20 Nestor Ortigoza swinging punches wildly at each other.

The fighting continued for several minutes despite police and stewards doing their best to break up the scuffles.

Paraguay's Jonathan Santana was sent off in extra-time of the fiesty encounter which ended goalless.

In the penalty shootout, Venezuela hit the woodwork three times before defender Dario Veron blasted his spot kick past Renny Vega to secure a 5-3 shootout win for Paraguay.

It continued their remarkable run of progressing through the tournament despite not winning a single game during open play.

Paraguay now face Uruguay in Sunday's showpiece final in Buenos Aires, their first for 32 years.

United top world sport's rich list

The Red Devils are worth a mind-boggling £1.165BILLION - eclipsing giant American franchises like the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees.

The assessment of United's worth takes in the value of the team, stadium, income and sponsorship deals it attracts.  United's advertising revenue had a big impact on their position - with the £80m, four-year shirt sponsorship deal they signed with Aon and £300m 13-year tie-up with Nike major factors.

Real Madrid were the second-highest place football club on the list, finishing in fifth place and valued at £900m.  And there was good news for Arsenal fans, with their team coming seventh with a value of £740m.

Roman Abramovich's Chelsea could only muster 46th in the table while other soccer teams making up the top 50 included Bayern Munich (19th), AC Milan (34th) and Juventus (49th).

Meanwhile Barcelona — widely reguarded as the best club side around — came only 26th in the rankings. The Catalan club is said to be worth £606million.

Brazil 2-2 USA (3-5 PKs) : Americans advance to seminals in dramatic fashion

The U.S. women's team moves on in the Women's World Cup in Germany after overcoming several obstacles to pull off the stunner against Marta and Brazil.

It was one of the all-time dramatic matches in women's soccer history.

The United States women's national team overcame a controversial call on a penalty kick, a red card and a one-goal deficit in extra time en route to a 2-2 (5-3 PKs) win to advance to the semifinals of the 2011 World Cup in Germany.

The Americans now have a smooth path to the finals after watching tournament favorites Germany and Brazil go down early on. Next up is France.

Forward Abby Wambach scored on a header in the 122nd minute to send the game to penalty kicks, where goalkeeper Hope Solo saved Brazil's third attempt to secure the win for the top-ranked team. The U.S. scored on all five penalty kicks.

Marta, the five-time World Player of the Year, scored Brazil's first two goals after an own goal by Daiane in the second minute gave the U.S. an early lead. It took a whole two hours before the Americans were able to score again.

Barcelona concerned by slow progress of Fabregas move

Cesc Fabregas reported back for training on Tuesday amid increasing uncertainty over whether his prospective move back to Barcelona will be completed ahead of Arsenal’s pre-season tour to Asia.

There is a sense on all sides that it would be beneficial for the deal to be finalised before Arsenal travel to Malaysia on Sunday but, as of Tuesday night, no agreement had been reached.
Arsenal remain determined to reach a valuation of around £40 million for Fabregas while Barcelona, who have been in regular contact with Arsenal over the past fortnight, do not want to pay more than £35 million.
The stand-off is causing frustration in Spain and there is even a fear in Barcelona that other clubs, including Manchester City, Real Madrid and Chelsea, could move to try and take advantage of the situation.
Fabregas did not train with the rest of the squad and instead had treatment on his hamstring.
Fabregas reported back to Arsenal's London Colney base yesterday but did not train with the rest of the squad and instead had treatment on his hamstring.
However, Arsenal will not want to show any sign of weakness in their negotiations and, as much as possible, want to give the impression that their preparations are unaffected by the saga surrounding their captain.

Yet if Fabregas does travel to Asia, the uncertainty about his future will inevitably cast a shadow over Arsenal's first big commercial tour under Arsène Wenger.

Meanwhile, Nasri has already strongly hinted that he wants to leave, with Manchester United poised to make a £20 million offer. Both Manchester City and Chelsea are also interested.
